HW- Cecil Rhodes

Excerpt from "Confession of Faith" by Cecil Rhodes

It often strikes a man to inquire what is the chief good in life; to one the thought comes that it is a happy marriage, to another great wealth, and as each seizes on his idea, for that he more or less works for the rest of his existence. To myself thinking over the same question the wish came to render myself useful to my country. I then asked myself how could I and after reviewing the various methods I have felt that at the present day we are actually limiting our children and perhaps bringing into the world half the human beings we might owing to the lack of country for them to inhabit that if we had retained America there would at this moment be millions more of English living.

I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race. Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimens of human beings what an alteration there would be if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence, look again at the extra employment a new country added to our dominions gives. I contend that every acre added to our territory means in the future birth to some more of the English race who otherwise would not be brought into existence. Added to this the absorption of the greater portion of the world under our rule simply means the end of all wars, at this moment had we not lost America I believe we could have stopped the Russian-Turkish war by merely refusing money and supplies. Having these ideas, what scheme could we think of to forward this object ?

1. What is Cecil Rhodes confessing (hint: what does he want) ?

2. Will his ideas help or hurt the rest of the world ? Explain

Your answer to each question must be at least 1 paragraph (Total: 2 paragraphs).

  1. Cecil Rhodes is expressing his thought on expanding upon imperialism due to the fact that he believes England should expand their power over other territories. Expanding can cause a use of resources that come from these territories. He states that people in England are the "finest race in the world". He explains that with high superiority, believing that if the (the Anglo Saxon race) takes control of all the countries and the world, it would be better for the human race. He is upset due to the loss to America in the Revolutionary War, and explains that if they grasped America, they would have many more people living in their country and would dominate the world.
I believe that his ideas will only hurt the rest of the world due to the fact that his ideas support racial discrimination. There would only be one dominate race in this world if these ideas were fulfilled although it is highly unlikely for one race to control the entire world. Cecil believes the people are ethnocentric and due to this war would result from many countries due to the British trying to take over. Our world would be uninteresting and full of conflict if only the English race conquered. The liberty of all other societies would be worthless.

  2. Cecil Rhodes confessed that he wanted everybody in this country to be happy with what they have. Like happy marriages and great wealth. He wants peace in America since the end of all the wars. He wanted to stop the Russian-Turkish wars by refusing money and supplies. He did not want any violence to happen. There are more other races add into British which he thinks the best race in this world, furthermore in this situation, there will not be no more wars to this world. Which we know for a fact will not happen anytime soon.
His ideas will hurt the rest of the world because without supplies and money America would have lost the war. And Rhodes ideas will hurt the rest of the world because it supports discrimination and race supremacy. The ideas aren't right and it's impossible to take control over the entire world. His ideas are very unreal and weird.

  3. Cecil Rhodes is trying to say that he wants the world to be in peace. No wars, or troubles that will affect the children in the future. He feels that a the present day we are limiting our children and bringing the world half the human beings. He probably is saying that he wants America to be inhabited more with English living.

I think his ideas will help and hurt the world. His ideas might help the world by making people notice how unique his world and how peaceful his way of world is. His idea can promote less wars and maybe spread more of a peaceful activity. His ideas may hurt the world because it may cause people to think of there own world and probably will do anything to make it happen.

1.Cecil Rhodes is confessing that the English Race is the best race in the humanity. This show extreme Imperialism. He wants to be noticed as the most dominating force in the world. He also wants to own the whole world in order to show its dominance and help the population of the Englishmen grow. He also wants everything, which shows how eager he is to conquer the whole world..

    2. I think his ideas will both help and hurt the world. It will help by making the people not give up against anything and try to achieve your dreams, and help your nation. For example many people made companies like Apple and Microsoft, and helped their nation a lot. On the other hand it can hurt more than it can help. It can spread bad influence and then make others take over people with no real reason and show dominance over the poor, and have bloodshed and kill innocent people over achieving foolish dreams.

    1. Cecil Rhodes is confessing about British imperialism. Since he is an imperialist, he wants the whole world to be part of the British Empire. Also Cecil Rhodes is ethnocentric and a nationalist because he states that the British is the finest race in the work and the more of the world they inhabit, the better it is for human race. He thinks it is better, because under the British rule, there will be the end of wars because adding more land to their territory means more people with the English race in the future.
    2. His ideas will hurt the rest of the world, because other countries will think this is unfair and they will go to war against Britain. This will result in less peace in the world, which contradicts to what Rhodes want. Also, Rhodes ideas is discriminating other races because he thinks British is more superior to other races. This is not true, because everyone is equal and Rhodes is arrogant and selfish for thinking that his race is better than other races. Lastly, Rhodes’s ideas are unrealistic because the world can’t just be dominated by one race because there are too many races and different traditions in this world.

  6. 1. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he believes in the white man being the superior race in the world. He says that instead having an English filled world, many sections of the world are ruled by inferior races. This is evident when he says,"We are actually limiting our children and perhaps bringing into the world half the human beings we might owing to the lack of country for them to inhabit that if we had retained America there would at this moment be millions more of English living." Rhodes is also saying that by bringing English influence to other parts of the world, they would be doing the world a favor since the English are "superior" and would help "stabilize" nations.

    2. Cecil Rhodes' ideas will hurt the rest of the world because his ideas bring vast amounts of social inequality. If Rhodes' ideal world was real, native people to the area would be treated as the lesser kind when compared to a pure English person. A similar situation is evident during the time when Spain was colonizing South America and the peninsulares and creoles would oppress the rest of the population. As a result, this social inequality could lead to rising anger in the natives which could lead to rebellions and revolutions.

  7. 1. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that humans are the greatest species alive and cannot give up our power to other species. Also, he is saying that the more people that are born, the more land we can conquer, He believes that with all of these people, we can stop wars. His theory is that the more people we have on our side, the easier it is to stop all wars, including the Russian-Turkish war.
    2. In a way, Cecil’s plans will most likely hurt the world. This is because if we don’t help in wars as allies, some day we might be attacked and no one would be there to help us because we didn’t help anyone in return. Plus, he wants to take over all the land and populate it with English people. This would lessen the diversity of many different people and cultures, which would probably start and uprising.

Cecil Rhodes confesses that he wants every acre added to his territory. He believes that if we had retained Americas there would at this moment be millions of more English living. He doesn't want children to have limited opportunities. He wants America to become a better place. He wants a bigger population inhabited in America.
His ideas will hurt the rest of the world. He states ".. at this moment had we not lost America I believe we could have stopped the Russian- Turkish war..", he wants America to become stronger as a whole. Since, he wants a bigger population, this will lead to more problems. A bigger population will lead to loss of jobs, and less place to live. It will hurt the rest of the world because although there will be a big population, most of the people would be living jobless.

  9. 1. Cecil Rhodes is admitting that the British are the superior race, and that the world would be privileged to be colonized by the British. He described other races as "the most despicable specimen." He wants more of the world to be under British rule. He believes that the world would be better if everyone had British genetics. He also believes that there will be no more wars if the entire world was under British rule.

    2. I believe his ideas are extremely radical and will hurt the world. People will little to no British genes will be persecuted, and there will be no toleration for people of other ethnic groups. His ideas are very nationalistic, but at the same time his ideas are extremely outdated when speaking on modern terms. His ideas supports racism and will not benefit the rest of the world.

  10. 1. Cecil Rhodes confession is that a certain race is more dominant. Rhodes claims every man has a certain goal for life and his goal is different. Rhodes confesses that his chief good in life is that there should be more Englishmen people being born. Rhodes claims that the English and their race is the most superior. Rhodes also says that if there is more of his race, the world will be less lacking and there will be a lot more benefit.

    2. His idea will hurt the world in my opinion. Rhodes claims having one race will be beneficial and cause less problem on the world. In my opinion, I believe that this could lead to more problems such as social inequality and more power to a certain group. These problems can lead to some groups not having a say in the law or people in certain classes being treated poorly.

  11. Cecil Rhodes
The idea that Cecil Rhode was trying to make clear to his viewers was that his race is what appears to be a “master race” where he believes that they are superior to all other living humans. From what it seems he believes that the Anglo-Saxon influence is the greatest of man-kind and that the more power they obtain will better the world and human-race as a whole. He states that “I contend that every acre added to our territory means in the future birth to some more of the English race that otherwise would not be brought to existence.” This quote shows his strong belief that his race is superior to every other and that the rest is lower and rather inferior to theirs.
Cecil Rhodes ideas with much less help the world but rather hurt it, by thinking that one is greater than another. This can be shown and proven throughout history, take Nazi Germany for example. Adolf Hitler a man with a same mind-set as Rhodes set out to conquer or annihilate any race, race, society or idea that would stand in his way. He believes that the Germans were superior and were mean to conquer and rule the world. This led to him to being extremely ambitious and became a conflict to many nations who really just wanted to maintain peace within their countries and society; one of the reasons why World War II was probably inevitable.

  12. In this paragraph, Cecil Rhodes is confessing the concern about Imperialism. He said:"I contend that we are the finest race in the world and that the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race. Just fancy those parts that are at present inhabited by the most despicable specimens of human beings what an alteration there would be if they were brought under Anglo-Saxon influence, look again at the extra employment a new country added to our dominions gives." In this sentence, there was a great sense of discrimination developed. Cecil Rhodes consisted the idea of social racism.
I believe his idea will hurt the rest of the world, because his idea is willing to set European race to superiority. This idea will harm the general benefit within the society, discrimination will lead to a lot of social problems and seperates the contry instead of united them, this consequence is harmful to the economic as well.

  13. 1. Cecil rhodes is saying that he believes that the british are the best. cecil rhodes wants cultural domination. He believes that the way he can be useful to his country is to try to get more land. Cecil Rhodes wants to get more land so there would be more people. Also, he believed that if Britain colonized the entire world, there would be no wars. His view was somewhat like a socialist view. he viewed the British as superior to others and that others were inferior. He thought that British rule was most closely like to an utopian society.
    2. Cecil Rhodes' ideas would hurt the world because there has not been 1 ruler where the people haven't rebelled or thought against their ideas. Rhodes thought that if the british were to control the world, that everybody would like them. but according to history, that probably will never happen. Many people believe that their country is the best or nationalism. but Cecil Rhodes took the nationalistic approach to the extreme. He said, ‘… the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race.’ This shows that he wasn’t in any way attempting to hide the way he felt about it. If he got what he wished (for the world to be only inhabited by the British and people just like them), the world would be in chaos.

  14. 1. Cecil Rhodes is confessing that he is a great leader compared to the other leaders he's seen. "I contend that we are the finest race in the world an that the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race." This quote implies that Cecil Rhodes believes in his abilities and his goals as what he's capable of doing. He believes that every acre added to their territory means the future birth to some more of the English race whos otherwise would not be brought into existence.

    2. Cecil Rhodes believes his ideas will hury the rest of the world as long as it helps him and his army. He is implying that the more territory he owns, he will be able to have a lot more resources that they need, and more superiority. "Added to this absoprtion of the greater portion of the world under our rule simply means the end of all wars, at this moment we had not lost America." This quote implies that Cecil Rhodes could've helped the conflicts occuring and that his power could've surely shown if he did.

  15. 1.Cecil Rhodes is saying that he wants to take control of everything. He wants to claim as much land a humanly possible. If there is a land that he wants then he shall take it. It is also saying how the human race is the best race justifying why they should take the land. Also he wants to take over the other parts of the world.
2.His ideas are hurt the rest of the world. He is expressing that everyone should go out and conquers whatever land they want. This will lead to more wars. If two countries really want a piece of land to themselves they will go to war over it. This causes a loss of lives over someone’s greediness.

  16. 1) Cecil Rhodes confessed that he wants to take over the world. He believes that the more of the world our race inhabits, the better it is for us because it is aiding in the help of ending all wars. He is huge on imperialism and and wishes to add every acre of land to his expanding territory, allowing the English race to grow in existence.

    2) I believe that his ideas will hurt the rest of world because of his greediness. He will never be happy until he owns every piece of land possible. This is already a recipe for disaster because it is history repeating itself, just like how it was with the Romans. The Romans owned too much land, making it hard for them to control everything, As a result of this, their empire fell apart, leaving many countries unstable.
