HW- Imperialism Statistics

Imperialism: The Numbers

1800: European nations controlled 35% of the earth's surface.
1878: 67% of the earth's surface
1914: 85% of the earth's surface

Between 1880-1900:
England gained 66 million new subjects (people they ruled).
France: 26 million new subjects.
Germany: 13 million new subjects.

1. Based on these statistics, how has the world been changed by imperialism?

2. How do these statistics help to explain why some nations are now rich while others are poor?

    1. Based on this statistics, the world has been changed by Imperialism in many ways. It has been taking over the world, as it says 85% of the world was under European control, which means that it will bring in European influence, which might cause many changes in its culture, there are many examples of such cases. It can also not get Independence for years, which can lead to many bloodshed to gain Independence. For example Congo, the culture there has been devastated, the conflict minerals have destroyed its economy terribly.

    2. These statistics help us to tell that why certain nations are rich and the other are poor, because the Europeans when captured, took many of their resources from them, which left them with no or some resources for them, the people got more and more rich that controlled the people, and the people got poorer and poorer. For example, even now in Congo the conflict minerals have caused many problems, which has dropped their economy. The European both influenced many nations both positively and negatively.

    1. The world has been changed by imperialism by small nations in the world being conquered or colonized by large nations. Based on the statistics, from 1800s to 1914, European nations controlled 85% of the earth’s surface. Also between 1880-1900 England, France, and Germany gained millions of subjects. This is the results of imperialism. The countries are using their advanced technology (example: steam boats) to colonize other nations from different parts of the world.
    2. These statistics help to explain why some nations are now rich while others are poor by the mother country colonizing other nations from different parts of the world. The mother country is taking advantage of its colonizes for natural resources/raw materials that the mother country doesn’t have. When the mother country obtains the raw materials, they manufacture the materials into products using their advanced technology, and then sell the product to its colonizing for profit. This shows that the mother country is in power, because its colonies rely on them for the products. This shows that some nations are rich and the others are poor. Nations like England, France, and Germany are rich because they make a profit from their colonies( poor).

  3. 1. These statistics show how the world has been affected by imperialism by showing the extent in which Europeans conquered other nations. Based on the statistics, in 1914, for instance, since 85% of the world was controlled by European countries, it was more than likely that the culture of those European countries, especially England, spread to the countries that were conquered. This could explain why a language such as English is spoken in the majority of the world today, regardless of those countries not being close to England. Also, one could even argue that without English imperialism, the United States would have never formed.

    2. The statistics help to explain why some nations are rich and others are poor because it shows how imperialism caused conquering nations to take the resources of weaker ones. For instance, many European nations took advantage of Africa's surplus of resources and split society in order to come in and gather resources such as diamonds and coffee to bring back to their motherlands. To make matters worse, these same European countries used African people to collect African resources to return to European countries in exchange for ridiculously low wages and extreme working conditions. By doing this, European countries and their economies prosper greatly at the expense of Africa.

  4. The world has been changed to more of an unequal distribution of land and power by imperialism. According to the statistics, during the 1800's, European nations controlled 35% of the earth's surface. During 1878, they own almost half of the earth's surface and then 1914, they have 85% of the earth's surface. The nations that are powerful distributes unfair possessions of land.

These statistics help explain why some nations are now rich while others are poor. Between 1880-1900, England gained 66 million new subjects. In addition, France gained 26 million new subjects and Germany gained 13 million new subjects. These statistics of subjects gained by nations shows how they cause many nations to be poor with little subjects.

  5. 1) Our world today has been majorly influenced by Imperialism. Europeans due to ethnocentrism thought they could dominate all of the world. They exploited other countries natural resources for their own personal gain and weakened their economies. Europeans enslaved people and took what they could due to their technological advancement. Our world could be much different if Europe hadn't controlled 85 percent. Say they only controlled about 25 percent, our world would be much different. The effects of Imperialism have impacted our world up to this day. Other countries could have overpowered Europe if with the right advancement.
    2) These statistics have a direct relationship to why some nations are rich and why some nations are poor. The Europeans took what they could and showed no mercy towards the people they controlled. They were enslaved and exploited of their resources. Africa is a major example due to the effects of British Imperialism. Europe basically controlled all of Africa which caused their strong economy to weaken. India as well is another where the people advanced in mathematics and sciences, but their economy was weakened and both economies are to this day due the the effects from Europe. Europe could have been overpowered if other countries had the correct advancement, but this is why some countries and now poor while others are rich. Some places have resources, but no money and vice versa. It is tragic to think that 85% of our world was dominated by the Europeans and the path each country would go was determined by this.

Based on these statistics, the world has been changed by imperialism by the increased percentage of gaining/ taking over the earth's surface. In 1800 it was 35%, In 1878 it was 67%, In 1914 it was 85%. It shows how nations got influenced by each other. It also shows how European nations controlled different amounts of the earth's surface in different years.
These statistics help to explain why some nations are now rich while others are poor because of how much imperialism effected each nation. As years passed by nations like England, France, and Germany gained millions of new subjects. Other nations are poor because they didn't gain that many new subjects (people they ruled) and didn't get as influenced as other nations. The poor nations had less people they ruled which is why they were known as a "poor nation".

  7. 1. Imperialism increased the amount of influence one nation might have over the world. Countries like England especially during that time period (1880-1900) gained a lot of subjects, therefore their influence over the world had to be tremendous.

    2. Some nations are rich because they exploit the resources in their colonies to generate wealth for the "mother" country. The case however. is vice-versa with the countries who had a long history of having their nations colonized, and their people oppressed, and their resources exploited by foreign powers. Many countries in modern day Africa has a long history of oppression by foreign powers, while their own resources were being exploited, therefore they're still very poor to this day, meanwhile you see many countries in Europe with a lot of money, and a stable economy.

  8. 1) The world has been changed by imperialism in European nations the statistics shows in 1800 European only controlled 35% of the earth's surface. But as the year goes by it increased by 1914 about a century they controlled 85% of earth's surface. They gained millions of new subjects which are people they ruled.

    2) Because the more they control the more workers they have. So while they control these earth's surface they control or ruled these people and they work for them. So more places they control more workers they have which means more money for the European nations. Their taking other nations resources and earning money. Its like taking someones laptop and selling it while you gain something they lose something. It's a win lose situation.

  9. 1. The statistics show that the world has changed from imperialism because over the years, more and more land has been conquered by different nations. For instance, many European nations such as Germany and France have taken over many parts of the world and made it theirs. Now that they have more land they can fit more people into their nations.
    2. These statistics help to see why some nations are richer than others because you can see the amount of people among the nations are unequal. As you can see from the statistics, England has more people in their nation. This tells you that they hold more land than other nations. This also means that their land can have more resources than other nations which mean they might be making more money than other nations. Consequently, this is why some nations are richer than others.

  10. 1. Based on these statistics, the world has been changed by imperialism in many ways. One way the world has been changed by imperialism is the amount of countries controlling other countries has increased from 35% to 85% from 1800 to 1914. This shows how countries set out to explore for new countries to colonize by using their advance technology. Another way imperialism changed the world is countries began to rule people. England, France, and Germany gained million of subjects from the year 1880 - 1900.

    2. These statistics help explain why some nations are rich because if a nation has the ability to colonize these countries, these countries are advanced. These countries can be advanced by having advanced machines, weapons, or other inventions that help with their everyday lives. This also shows that these countries are rich because they are able to use the people they rule to help increase profits for their country. An example of this is England when they conquered some African countries and received goods and sold it at their homeland for more.

  11. 1. The world has been changed by imperialism because it allows a country to expand their power and influence through diplomacy or military force. As shown, Europe has owned so much of the earth's surface because of their power and will to take over other parts. They had the ability to take over more and more territories throughout the years, and they managed to gain a lot more. In 1878, they owned over 67% of the earth's surface. By 1914, they owned over 85% of the earth's surface. They used to say that Europe is "The nation that never rests."

    2. These statistics help explain why some nations are rich and others are poor because depending on the nation and their amount of imperialism, they can manage to obtain as many resources and land they need as long as they have the military force to take it. For example, the Russia and Ukraine war. Russia has a very large army compared to Ukraines military, so Russia thinks they will be able to take over their land and make it their once again. Owning the amount of land needed depends solely on military and government justices.

  12. 1. The world was changed by imperialism because by the end of 1914 85% of the world surface was influenced by the british which means that today 85% of the world has a british background or some cultural diffusion in their history.
    2. these statistics will help explain why some nations are poor and some nations are rich. i believe that the countries the british ruled are the ones in which are still thriving today and growing from their british influence. the poor countries are either ones not influenced by the british or ones that were but decided to go their own way and thrive on their own. this is my way of using these statistics to compare to modern day because most countries around 85% of the world are rich or have some decent amount of money. 15% of the world today is struggling to feed their people and i think the british have 100% to do with this.

  13. Imperialism Statistics: The Numbers
Throughout history the world has been change by imperialism for the better and sometimes for the worst. Europe for example is known for its world-wide imperialism during to 1800s to the 1900s Europe was a large, their empire and nation as a whole strong, powerful and fierce. From the statistics shown it clearly states that in the 1800 the European nations controlled much of earth’s surface 35% by 1876 nearly double of that and by 1914 85% of earth’s surface. From this there has been increased production, exploration of new territory and discovery of new raw materials that the world has to offer. Furthermore, more control and expansion will also mean an immense growth in population almost, 66 million “subjects” (people under their rule.)
Yet bring great change in society for the better, there were still many negative effects. Such as nations such as Britain thrived with wealth while many other countries would suffer in poverty. This was due to a number of reasons; however the greatest one being the exploitation of workers after they conquer new lands. The workers would be paid little to do all the dirty work for raw materials worth almost 100 xs more than what they were getting paid, later shipped back to the mother country for production of goods which would then be sold back to the conquered lands for greater profits.

  14. 1) Based on these statistics, the world has been impacted greatly by imperialism. From 1800-1914, the amount of Europeans nations that ruled the earths surface grew tremendously. In 1878, imperialism grew 32%, as shown above. From 1880-1900, the amount of subjects they ruled also grew. England, France, and Germany, together gained over half of 100 new subjects. This shows us that the world was affected greatly by imperialism because as they years passed, the European countries gained more power, slowly taking over the world.

    2) These statistics help to explain why some nations are now rich while others are poor because these powerful nations such as England, France, and Germany had so much power at that time, allowing them to enforce taxes on their subjects. These taxes they receive help make the government stronger allowing them to take over more land. Imperialism leaves a negative effect on these countries because these European nations sometimes become greedy, always wanted to conquer more land. When one nation conquers a piece of land, another nation wants of piece of it as well. One example of this is Africa. Africa back then was divided up into so many pieces because of Europeans Nations that owned it. Today it is suffering from poverty and instability due to the impact of imperialism.

  15. 1.The statistics showed is how European nations have thrived due to imperialism. As the years of imperialism went on European nations controlled more and more surface of the land. In the 1800 European nations controlled 35% of the Earth’s surface, but by 1914 European nations controlled 85% of Earth’s surface. Also, between 1880-1900, these nations gained more subjects. England alone gained 66 million new subjects.
2.These statistics show how some nations are rich while others are poor by showing their success. Nations like England are so rich due to their prior successes due to imperialism. When England was imperialistic they made the most of it. They were able to gain 66 million new subjects, which means 66 million new consumers. This is the same for other nations such as France and Germany.
