Life in Germany During the Weimar Republic

The flight from currency that had begun with the buying of diamonds, gold, country houses, and antiques now extended to minor and almost useless items -- bric-a-brac, soap, hairpins. The law-abiding country crumbled into petty thievery. Copper pipes and brass armatures weren't safe. Gasoline was siphoned from cars. People bought things they didn't need and used them to barter -- a pair of shoes for a shirt, some crockery for coffee. Berlin had a "witches' Sabbath" atmosphere. Prostitutes of both sexes roamed the streets. Cocaine was the fashionable drug. In the cabarets the newly rich and their foreign friends could dance and spend money. Other reports noted that not all the young people had a bad time. Their parents had taught them to work and save, and that was clearly wrong, so they could spend money, enjoy themselves, and flout the old.

The publisher Leopold Ullstein wrote: "People just didn't understand what was happening. All the economic theory they had been taught didn't provide for the phenomenon. There was a feeling of utter dependence on anonymous powers -- almost as a primitive people believed in magic -- that somebody must be in the know, and that this small group of 'somebodies' must be a conspiracy."

When the 1,000-billion Mark note came out, few bothered to collect the change when they spent it. By November 1923, with one dollar equal to one trillion Marks, the breakdown was complete. The currency had lost meaning.

All money is a matter of belief. Credit derives from Latin, credere, "to believe." Belief was there, the factories functioned, the farmers delivered their produce. The Central Bank kept the belief alive when it would not let even the government borrow further.

But although the country functioned again, the savings were never restored, nor were the values of hard work and decency that had accompanied the savings. There was a different temper in the country, a temper that Hitler would later exploit with diabolical talent. Thomas Mann wrote: "The market woman who without batting an eyelash demanded 100 million for an egg lost the capacity for surprise. And nothing that has happened since has been insane or cruel enough to surprise her."

With the currency went many of the lifetime plans of average citizens. It was the custom for the bride to bring some money to a marriage; many marriages were called off. Widows dependent on insurance found themselves destitute. People who had worked a lifetime found that their pensions would not buy one cup of coffee.

Pearl Buck, the American writer who became famous for her novels of China, was in Germany in 1923. She wrote later: "The cities were still there, the houses not yet bombed and in ruins, but the victims were millions of people. They had lost their fortunes, their savings; they were dazed and inflation-shocked and did not understand how it had happened to them and who the foe was who had defeated them. Yet they had lost their self-assurance, their feeling that they themselves could be the masters of their own lives if only they worked hard enough; and lost, too, were the old values of morals, of ethics, of decency."

The fledgling Nazi party, whose attempted coup had failed in 1923, won 32 seats legally in the next election. The right-wing Nationalist party won 106 seats, having promised 100 percent compensation to the victims of inflation and vengeance on the conspirators who had brought it.

1. How did hyperinflation (rapid inflation making currency almost worthless) radically change Germany?

2. How did the Nazi party benefit from Germany's economic crisis?

  1. 1. The hyperinflation of rapidly changed Germany in a few ways. One way the currency affected Germany is it changed the way people were taught. Kids growing up were taught to work and save. During the time of the inflation, they would buy everything and things that they didn’t even need. Since the economy was in a awful shape, the people set out for someone to take over which is one of the reasons why the German people looked for a new party like the Nazi party. The citizens did not understand the situation how to handle this situation if it ever occurred.

    2. The Nazi party benefited from Germany’s economic crisis by making promises. The Nazi party was seen as a new hope since the economy was failing and unemployment rates skyrocketed. The people resorted to a change in the government and that is where the the Nazi party came in.The Nazi party was seen as something new due to Germany’s economic situation. During the next election, the Nazi party won 32 seats.

    1. Hyperinflation radically changed Germany by, people lost their money that they have been saving up from all their hard work. People try to find the solution to how hyperinflation occurred in the country but they couldn’t explain this phenomenon. They also lost the hope of working hard to earn more money was lost because of hyperinflation. For example, people bought things they didn’t need to barter for other things, prostitutes roamed the streets, cocaine was used, and etc. Germany was basically in chaos during the time of hyperinflation.
    2. The Nazi party benefited from the economic crisis by the people of the country is in a desperate situation and they need someone to bring Germany back to normal, and that “someone” was the Nazi party. The Nazi party won over the people by promising 100 percent compensation to the victims of inflation and vengeance on the conspirators who brought it. This convinced the people immediately, because the people believe that their current government is not solving the country’s problem, so they need someone else to rise to power and solve the economic crisis. This is how the Nazi party rose to power.

    1. The hyperinflation dumped Germany in one of the greatest depression in history. Nowadays we can possibly buy nothing for a dollar, but in Germany 1 dollar was worth 1 trillion mark. This was extremely surprising. People started stealing from each other and horror spread in streets. Many old people suffered because they couldn't do anything with their pensions.

2.The whole time Nazi Party was in the back making money for the others to recover. On their side they were exterminating the Jews and making the "superior" race of the Aryans. All this lead to increase in needs for them to follow these goals. They made the people happy and the others were happy. They made so much out of it that they lost their minds.

    1. The hyperinflation radically change Germany because by making currency almost worthless more people would get poor. Thus making it harder for peasants to get food for their family. Many marriages were called off and widows depended on insurance found themselves destitute. People who work a lifetime found that their pensions would not buy one cup of coffee.

    2. The Nazi party benefited from Germany's economic crisis because they knew Germany was in poor state. Thus making the Nazi party an opportunity to gain power. Everyone was bewildered and lost. The Nazi party won 32 seats legally in the next election and promised 100 percent compensation to the victims of inflation and vengeance on the conspirators who had brought it.

  5. 1. The hyperinflation radically change Germany because the German government were printing more and more money that led to prices kept going up. The inflation in Germany became out of control, which led to the price of an item doubling in hours. Workers found their wages worthless because prices had risen since they began their shifts. Customers' deposits became worthless as German banks went out of business.

    2. The Great Depression began and many were in poverty and began to look for a solution. They were so desperate that they were willing to listen to anyone, like Adolf Hitler. The Nazi party benefited from Germany's economic crisis because the Nazi party won 32 seats legally in the next election. This also allowed Hitler getting elected while at the same time building a Nazi government secretly that would one day replace the democracy.

  6. Hyperinflation impacted Germany by changing the citizens. For instance, a woman who lost an egg demanded for 100 million, which just goes to show how the money there is basically worthless that one egg equals to that amount. Moreover, citizens who worked all their life realize that their pension is so miniscule; they won’t be able to afford a cup of coffee with it. Millions and millions of people lost all their worth. All of these people lost everything they’ve built up over the years of hard work, from confidence to their morals. This event ruined many lives in Germany.

The Nazi party benefitted from Germany’s economic crisis because they gained more political power. Back in 1923, they tried to overthrow the government and seize power but it didn’t work, however, this time they won 32 positions in the next election. This means they now hold some power in the government. Therefore, making them have more control over the citizens.

  7. 1) Hyperinflation radically changed Germany due to the massive increase in poverty. By November 1923, one dollar was equal to one trillion Marks. Money was worthless and people didn't even bother to collect their change. Banks went out of business, and people realized that all their savings were gone. The people needed a leader that could stabilize their nation.
    2) The Nazi party benefited from Germany's economic crisis. They took advantage of the fact that Germany was vulnerable and unstable. The manipulation of the Nazis gave them access to the Germans votes. Germany was a disaster due to WW1 and the depression. They just needed someone to rely on to stabilize their nation. They used propaganda and completely brainwashed the Germans with all these ideas about the Jews.

  8. Hyperinflation radically changed Germany since the money/currency lost its value and meaning. Many marriages got called off due to this issue. Also, many average citizens lost their lifetime plans along with the currency. This was a tough time for Germany.
The Nazi party benefited from Germany's economic crisis by winning 32 seats legally in the next election. Before this major event hyperinflation, the Nazi party's attempt failed in 1923. Moreover, the right-wing nationalist party also own 106 seats. They were promised 100 percent compensation to the victims of inflation and vengeance.

  9. 1.Germany went from a prosperous country to an economically deprived country. Prior to the hyperinflation Germany was a country that’s currency had begun with the buying of diamonds, gold, country houses, and antiques. But since hyperinflation occurred it relied on bric-a-brac, soap and hairpins. This shows the contrast of the economy due to hyperinflation.
2.The Nazi party benefited from this economic crisis because they gained many supporters. The citizens of Germany looked at what was going on and they didn’t like what they saw. They wanted a change. And for this change to occur they needed another party to take control, the Nazi Party.

  10. 1. Hyperinflation essentially made the currency lose all of it's value. The currency itself was now worthless, because money that were once used to buy diamonds, gold, and country houses and other sources of wealth are now only capable to buy things that are of little to no value. People eventually began to turn to other measures to provide for themselves an their families such as petty thievery. The rate of inflation was so bad that that one dollar was equivalent to one trillion marks. Overall hyperinflation caused people to make desperate and in this case extreme changes.

    2. The Nazi party essentially made the best of Germany's situation. The Nazi party made a lot of promises to the desperate German people. They promised 100% compensation to the victims of the inflation, and vengeance on those who are are responsible. The Nazi party gained mass support and were a major influence in regards of politics. Hitler and his party made promises that sounds so glamorous that the German people had no other alternative other than to follow him.

  11. Life in Germany during the Weimar Republic
Due to the instability of Germany during the Weimar Republic, the nation was desperate to get out of the debt that was put into it after the First World War. Thus, this resulted in the rapid and over abused system of printing money. This was known as hyperinflation. However, doing so will have an overall negative effect on one nation as the value of its currency will drop since there no product/ resources to back up the currency. Without support currency is nothing but a piece of paper. In Germany’s case hyperinflation ended up making Germany’s currency pretty much worthless, the text states that “When the 1,000 billion Mark note came out; few bothered to collect the change when they spent it. By November 1923, with one dollar equal to one trillion Marks, the currency was meaningless.” This shows how devastation the inflation was and pretty much the change that people were getting back after purchasing or using their money was insignificant.
Eventually, this lead to the rise of the Nazis, a group of extremist fueled with the idea of fascism and lead by a man; Adolf Hitler. This was mostly due to the fact that Hitler and his Nazi party blamed the communists for the country’s instability and depression. It very soon won the favor of the people in Germany where Hitler was able to overthrow the communist and seize power as Germany’s supreme ruler. Hitler and his party promised to restore Germany and bring back its economic stability which lead Germany’s desperate society to put faith in his beliefs.

  12. The hyperinflation radically change Germany by breaking the mind of the Germany citizens. At the beginning, people buy the stuff that they don't even need. The mother teach their kids to work hard and save, but instead they just spend more money. The hyperinflation made chaos in Germany by breaking their belief and mind.
The Nazi party can be benefit from Germany's economic crisis because this is now the perfect time for the Nazi to perform brainwashing tactic in order gain support from Germans. This period is best moment for the Nazi because the citizens were desperated for this economic disaster, their life-saving suddenly worth less than a cup of coffee. Nazi's propaganda had inspire the citizens.

  13. The hyperinflation happened in Germany after WW1 had created a chaotic economy. People worked their lifetime to save money had lost its meaning and value. Different items were bargained among people since the value of currency is lower than daily supplies. Many dreams and lives were ruined due to this terrible loss, and a savior to this tragic is desperately desired.

Hitler saw the desperation among people, and decided to take advantage of it. He gave people promises and a target to blame for the tragedies happened in Germany. The economic crisis in Germany had built a perfect environment to the Nazi party, allowing it to expand and gain trusts. With the commitment of rising economy and censure upon the Jews, people started to see Hitler as the new leader of Germany and started to join the Nazi party.

  14. 1. Hyperinflation radically changed Germany because it cause the currency to completely lose its value and meaning. By November 1923 on dollar was equal to one trillion Marks. Money was practically useless, by time the 1,000 billion Mark was produced no one even bothered to collect their change when they spent their money. People who had worked their entire life found out that their pensions couldn't even buy one cup of coffee. This caused a lot of people to lose their motivation.

    2. The Nazi party had benefitted from Germanys economic crisis. Many people from the Nazi party had won seats at elections. Those who lost wars, often came back home to find that their countries economy is struggling and is very vulnerable or weak. People are desperate for order and they want someone to take control. Many individuals of the Nazi party saw this as an opportunity and took advantage of it.

  15. 1. Hyperinflation completely changed Germany by changing how the economy and other things functioned. For instance, since in 1923, a dollar was equal to a trillion Marks, the German currency was worth nothing. As a result, the German populace had to live off a barter system, trading in a pair of shoes for a shirt. On a more personal level, people themselves began to change. They began to question themselves and doubted that that could actually control their life and prosper in it.
    2. The Nazi party benefited from Germany's economic crisis by taking advantage of the desperation of the German people. These people had lost a majority of their things such as fortunes and homes, and were therefore looking for someone or something to bring them back to normal status. Because of this, when presented with the Nazi party and their beliefs, the German populace fell in love with it and began to support it without second-guessing it. Due to so many people having lost their fortunes and having little to nothing, the Nazi party was able to very quickly gain support from the German people.

  16. 1. How did hyperinflation (rapid inflation making currency almost worthless) radically change Germany?
Do to hyperinflation, currency became almost worthless. The credit and trust of the government were down to zero, although the country functioned again. However, the damages and savings were never restored. People started to barter, items for items, many people who had worked a lifetime found out that their pensions would not buy one cup of coffee. People became desperately and were in depression.
    2. How did the Nazi party benefit from Germany's economic crisis?
Germany's economic crisis caused Germans became desperately and were in depression. They needed someone to be blamed of, someone that have take all the responsibilities. Also someone that could pull them out from those situtations, the Nazi party became a option. Who have promised 100 percent compensation to the victims of inflation and vengeance on the conspirators who had brought it, the Nazi party won the election and in charge of power.
