HW- The Ideology of Aryanism

Who were the Aryans? Hitler's Persistent Mythology

One of the most interesting puzzles in archaeology, and one that hasn't been completely solved yet, concerns the story of the supposed Aryan invasion of the Indian subcontinent. The story goes like this: The Aryans were a tribe of Indo-European-speaking, horse-riding nomads living in the arid steppes of Eurasia. Sometime around 1700 BC, the Aryans invaded the ancient urban civilizations of the Indus Valley, and destroyed that culture. The Indus Valley civilizations were far more civilized than any horse-back nomad, having had a written language, farming capabilities, and led a truly urban existence. Some 1,200 years after the supposed invasion, the descendants of the Aryans, so they say, wrote the classic Indian literature called the Vedic manuscripts.

Adolf Hitler and the Aryan/Dravidian Myth

Adolf Hitler twisted the theories of Gustaf Kossinna (1858-1931), to put forward the Aryans as a master race of Indo-Europeans, who were supposed to be Nordic in appearance and directly ancestral to the Germans. These Nordic invaders were defined as directly opposite to native south Asian peoples, called Dravidians, who were supposed to have been darker-skinned.

The problem is, most if not all of this story--"Aryans" as a cultural group, invasion from the arid steppes, Nordic appearance, the Indus Civilization being destroyed, and, certainly not least, the Germans being descended from them--may not be true at all.

Flawed Arguments and Recent Investigations

It turns out that there are serious problems with this argument. There are no references to an invasion in the Vedic manuscripts; and the Sanskrit word "Aryas" means "noble", not a superior cultural group. Secondly, recent archaeological evidence suggests that the Indus civilization was shut down by droughts combined with a devasting flood, not a violent confrontation. Recent archaeological evidence also shows that many of the so-called "Indus River" valley peoples lived in the Sarasvati River, which is mentioned in the Vedic manuscripts as a homeland. There is no biological or archaeological evidence of a massive invasion of people of a different race.

The most recent studies concerning the Aryan/Dravidian myth include language studies, which have attempted to decipher and thereby discover the origins of the Indus script, and the Vedic manuscripts, to determine the origins of the Sanskrit in which it was written. Excavations at the site of Gola Dhoro in Gujarat suggest the site was abandoned quite suddenly, although why that may occurred is yet to be determined.

Racism and Science

Born from a colonial mentality, corrupted by a Nazi propaganda machine, the Aryan invasion theory is finally undergoing radical reassessment by south Asian archaeologists and their colleagues, using the Vedic documents themselves, additional linguistic studies, and physical evidence revealed through archaeological excavations. The Indus valley cultural history is an ancient and complex one. Only time will teach us what role if any an Indo-European invasion took in the history; but it seems clear that a collapse of the Indus civilization did not occur.

Extra info:

"German nationalism turned this word into a noun, "Aryan," and capitalized it to refer to an imagined race of people that were the original Sanskrit speakers who had composed its great texts. Early romantic claims that Indians were the ancestors of the Europeans were gradually replaced by the new myth that a race called "Indo-Aryans" was the common ancestors to both. Their origin was thought to be in the Caucasus Mountains, hence the term "Caucasian." Later, the "Indo" was dropped and the white Aryan Race Theory emerged. Thus, from the European desire to be seen as the inheritors of the Sanskrit civilization, the notion of a European super-race was born, with Germany as its highest manifestation.

How did this come about? In the late 1700s, European identity was shaken when scholars discovered that Sanskrit was closely related to the European languages, though much older and more sophisticated. At first, this discovery fed European Romantic imagination, in which India was glorified as the perfect past. Herder, a German Romanticist, saw Europe's "discovery" of India as a "re-discovery" of its own foundation. India was viewed as Europe's mother civilization by Frederick Schlegel in Germany and by Voltaire in France. William Jones, a British colonial administrator, considered Sanskrit the most marvelous product of the human mind. Sanskrit and Indology entered most major European universities between 1800 and 1850, challenging if not replacing Latin and Greek texts as a source for "new" ideas. Many new disciplines were shaped by the ensuing intellectual activity, including linguistics, comparative religion, modern philosophy and sociology".

1. How did Hitler use "science" to justify his racist theories?

2. How were Hitler's theories of a "master race" completely flawed and inaccurate?

  1. 1. Hitler used science to justify his racist theories by claiming Germans are descendants of the Aryans. Hitler twisted the theory of the Aryans to make them seem like the Germans were supposed to be like this. Hitler is using a twisted theory for his racist theories. For example, the Indus Civilization whom the Aryans supposedly attacked were directly opposite to the Aryan people, the South Asian people were supposedly dark-skinned. Hitler is using this twisting this theory to justify what he wants.

    2. Hitler’s theories of a “master race” were completely inaccurate and flawed for a few reasons. One of the reasons is is the meaning of Aryans. “Aryas” means “noble” and Hitler described Aryans as a superior group invading the Indus Civilization. In addition, the Indus Civilization supposedly ended due to droughts and floods. Studies have shown that there is no biological or archaeological evidence of an invasion.

    1) Hitler used “science” to justify his racist theories by twisting the theories in his favor and he states that the Aryans are the master race. His theory is that the Aryans invaded the urban civilizations of the Indus Valley and 1,200 years after the invasion, the Aryan descendants wrote the Vedic Manuscripts. Hitler said this so he can get rid of all the impurities so Germany can be completely dominant of the Aryan race. The impurities that Hitler that Hitler want to get rid of is the Jews, Gypsies, handicapped people, homosexuals, and anyone he deemed unfit for the master race. In order to get id of these people, Hitler tries to use the Aryan master race theory to win people over to his side so he can justify his theories as true. If the most of the Germans believe his lies then everyone would just believe it too, because other people believe it is true too.
    2) Hitler’s theories of a “master race” were completely flawed and inaccurate by there were no evidence of the Aryans invasions in the Vedic manuscript. Also the Sanskrit word “Aryas” means noble not superior group. In addition to, Hitler said that the Indus civilizations were invaded by the Aryans; however, archeological studies suggest that the civilization were destroyed by droughts and floods, not by invasions of another race. Lastly, studies have shown that many of the “Indus River” valley people lived in Sarasvati River in Vedic manuscripts as homeland.

    1. Hitler used "science" to justify his theories. He said that the Aryans were horse back riders and came to change the world. They were nomads and were superior. Hitler also claimed that the Aryans destroyed the Indian culture, and spread its own culture and wrote the Vedic documents. The Aryans were proved to be nomadic and were considered noble, Hitler used this theory to support his claim that they emerged from Europe to Asia, and then came back to Germany to create a superior nation.

    2. Hitler's theories of a "master race" completed flawed and inaccurate because the Aryans were proven never to destroy the Indian culture. They went there and diffused their culture like every other society, and were considered nobles on horseback, but never destroyed the Indian culture. They wrote the Vedic, but it doesn't prove that Aryans were superior. The land of the Indians was destroyed by the droughts and floods, and not by the Aryans annexing it.

  4. 1. Hitler's used "science" to justify his racist theories by saying how Europe was once inhabited by a blond-haired, blue-eyed people of superior intelligence, military ability and fitness to rule. He used propaganda to justify how the people who have blond-haired, blue-eyed people are superior than those who don't own these characteristics. He used this theory to make people look down on Jews. Hitler wanted his "master race" to rule the world.

2.Hitler's theories of a "master race" is completely flawed and inaccurate because there were no references to an invasion in the Vedic manuscripts. Also the Sanskrit word "Aryas" means "noble", not a superior cultural group. In addition, recent archaeological evidence suggests that the Indus civilization was shut down by droughts combined with a devastating flood, not a violent confrontation. Last, there is no biological or archaeological evidence of a massive invasion of people of a different race.

  6. Hitler used science to justify racist theories by twisting the words of Gustav Kossinna. It is stated that Aryans descended from the Indus Civilization after the civilization got invaded and destroyed. This makes them assume they are the superior race. The Germans believed that they descended from the Indus Civilization, which would make them believe that they hold the same power that the Indus Valley people did. Therefore, he blamed this on an Indo-European invasion.

Hitler’s theory in his master race was completely flawed because the story he gave was full of fallacies. He stated that the Indus Civilization was destroyed because of an invasion; however that was not the case. Research has shown that the Indus Civilization was destroyed due to drought and flooding. Moreover, assessments by archaeologist have been done and results have shown that the Indus Civilization did not collapse like Hitler said it did.

  7. 1) Hitler uses "science" to justify his racist theories by using a South Asian archaeologist. It was believed that the Aryans, an Indo- European tribe that lived in Eurasia, had destroyed the Indus River Valley civilization. Hitler believed the Germans truly descended from the Aryans, and that they are the "master race". There is no record of this happening in history according to the manuscripts.

    2) Hitler's theories about the "master race" were completely flawed and inaccurate. People were still brainwashed by his lies. The Verdic manuscripts were wrong about the invasions. The Indus River Valley civilization suffered from floods/droughts, not violence. There is no evidence of the battle at the Sarasvati River, which was the Aryans homeland. Aryan means "noble", but Hitler translated that into "superior culture group". Hitler's theories of a "master race" was all false evidence.

  8. Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories so that he can defend his thinking towards the jews. He used scientifc theories to justify his killing of the jews. Also, Hitler twisted around the theories of Gustaf so that he can put forward the Aryans as a master race of the Indo-Europeans. They were people that were supposed to be Nordic in appearance and directly ancestral to the Germans.
Hitler's theories of a "master race" were completely flawed and inaccurate because studies concerning the Aryan/Dravidian myth included language studies. The studies have attempted to decipher and thereby discover the origins of the Indus script. Also, many new disciplines were shaped/discovered. For example, intellectual activity, linguistics, comparative religion, modern philosophy, and sociology.

  9. 1. Hitler twisted the theories of Gustaf Kossinna, to put the Aryans as a master race of the Indo-Europeans. The Aryans were supposedly the direct ancestors to the German people. The Aryans had a Nordic appearance, and were total opposites in terms of their appearance with the Dravidians who supposedly had darker skin. Hitler put forward the Aryans as a master race, and viewed any other groups as inferior. He used "science" to claim that the Aryans looked a certain way, etc.

    2. Hitler's theories of a master race were flawed and inaccurate in many ways. There was no reference to any invasion in the Verdic manuscripts. The Sanskrit word "Aryas" means noble, not a superior cultural group. Many of Hitler's theories of a "master race" was corrupted from Nazi propaganda. Many south Asian archaeologists were using the Verdic documents themselves, and were still trying to learn new information themselves, therefore Hitler's theories were completely false.

  10. 1. Hitler used science to justify his racist theories in many ways. One way in which he justified his is by physical appearance. Based off of looks and other genetic features Hitler tried to justify his believes. Based of skin color, eye color, facial structure, etc. were just some of the many ways in which justified his believes. Other ways include the descendants with which they came from (Aryans).
2.Hitler claimed that the Arians invaded the Indian subcontinent but there is no archaeological evidence of this. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Indus river valley was shut down due to droughts and devastating flooding not violence. Also the Vedic Manuscript expresses thing that would say otherwise to Hitler’s theories. It says that Aryans means nobles not a superior culture group, etc.

  11. 1. Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories because science was considered a smart, logical subject. Hearing Hitler speak with logical reason, more people believed in him. He twisted his words more into lies by making his own theories.Hitler used science to explain his racism. He changed the stories of Gustaff Kosina. In Hitler’s mind, the Aryans were the master race of the Indo Europeans, and were directly ancestral to the Germans. The Nordic Invaders were supposedly dark skinned, and were called the Dravidians.

    2. Hitler's theories of a “master race” were completely flawed and inaccurate because there wasn’t any proof to what had originally happened. No references to an invasion and no physical evidence stating the Indus went down due to floods/droughts. The Indus supposedly lived on the Sarasvati River which is their homeland. Also, the word “Aryas” means “noble", whereas Hitler translated it to “superior culture group". There is no archaeologic or biological evidence supporting the idea of an invasion by a different race.

  12. The Ideology of Aryanism
Adolf Hitler during World War II many people of his time was a master of manipulation. He was great at winning the favor of his people to work and follow his extreme ideas and beliefs. Furthermore, one of his most notable and extreme proposals was utilizing his ideas of “science” to justify his racist theories such that the Aryans a powerful, wise group of people were their ancestors and founded their great nation known as Germany. Furthermore, because of this great ancient civilization Hitler believed and proposed that the Germans especially of pure blood German origin are to be the “master race” of the world and that the Jews and others that didn't fit in such as the colored, homosexuals, or ones that showed differences were inferior and weak. However, what got the people into believing his radical ideas was propaganda over and over again which portrayed the way he imagined a “perfect” society/world.
Hitler’s theories however, of his “master race” were flawed and inaccurate. The text states the studies show, “There are no Vedic manuscripts; and the Sanskrit word “Aryas” means “noble”, not a superior cultural group; which argue that Adolf Hitler’s definitions were flawed. Furthermore, like mentioned previously, these were all twisted theories to apply into propaganda in order to brainwash the people in his soon to become superior nation, more so the most elite cultural group the world has ever seen.

  13. Hitler use "science" to justify his racist theories by misleading Germans that Aryan is a pure white race and carry with the winner trait. But in fact, Aryan is a nomad race and not pure white. Hitler confused people by using some scientific evidence in linguistic to cover his racist theory.
Hitler's theories of a "master race" completely flawed and inaccurate because Aryan culture is actually developed in India. There are still no actual evidence that can prove the Aryan culture and it's history. Hitler's theories of a "master race" is only based on the victory of Aryans once defeated the Indus Valley civilization culture. Plus, it is still a mistery that whether the Indus Valley was demolished by drought or war.

  14. Hitler had twisted an unproven myth to persuade people the superior of Germans. He claimed the Aryans are the ancestor of German people and they were born to be the best. He believed that, even though Germany is not as advance as other countries are, they will still win as the Aryans did with other civilizations. The Aryan's victory are viewed as the victory of Germany, along the battle with other countries.

However, myth is only a myth, it has never been scientifically proven. No biological or archaeological evidence has been collected from this "massive invasion from Aryans". Additionally, recent evidence shown that the Indus civilization was destroyed by drought, combined with devastating flood, instead of violence confrontation. The Sanskrit word "Aryas“ meant noble, not superiors. It was twisted by Hitler to brainwash people and to built this superiority so they would follow his commands.

  15. 1. Adolf Hitler used "science" to justify his racist theories by the Aryan/ Dravidian Myth. The myth about the Aryan tribe was that they were a group of Indo-European speaking nomads who rode horses. This specific tribe of people so called invaded ancient urban civilizations of the Indus Valley which destroyed their culture. The reason why this is a myth because there is no record of this ever happening in history.

    2. Hitler's theories of a master race were completely wrong and inaccurate because there were no references or evidence of the thing he mentioned in the Vedic manuscripts. Another way it was inaccurate was proved by recent archaeological evidence. The evidence suggested that the Indus civilization was shut down by droughts and not by war. Also, it showed that the people lived in the Sarasvati River which is mentioned as a homeland in the manuscript. There is no archaeologic or biologic evidence supporting the idea of an invasion by a different race.

  16. 1. Hitler used science to justify his racist theories by claiming that the German people originated from the "Aryan master race." He claimed that the Aryans were a very powerful nomadic group of people who invaded the Indus Valley civilizations. Most importantly, Hitler claimed that the Aryans were related to the Germans. In doing so, he brought about the idea that because Germans were related to the Aryans, and they were supposedly the master race, the Germans were therefore logically also the master race and everyone else was inferior.
    2. Hitler's theories of a "master race" were completely flawed and inaccurate because his facts have recently been discovered to be fabricated lies. In recent years, it has been found that the Vedic manuscripts make no reference to an invasion. Also, archaeologists have found that the Indus civilizations were shut down by droughts combined with floods and not an invading force. Lastly, the Sanskrit word "Aryas" means "noble", not a superior cultural group.
